The mask she wears

By Caroline Araes

Scarred by the world, broken, bruised and shattered she walks the earth.

Day by day she takes it hoping for a better day. Hopeless she feels as nothing but darkness lies ahead of her.

Sadness she feels when she looks down and secretly asks for strength to move on.

Masks she wears for the naked eye to see.

Bright, happy and bubbly she seems to the fellow human.

A smile she wears to hide all the pain she feels inside.

A smile she wears to hold back the tears from escaping the corners of her eyes.

I laugh she lets out to show the other that she is fine. Behind that masks lies a vulnerable little girl, waiting, hoping to be saved.

Hoping that one will come along that will see past her happy surface.

The Mask she wears.
